Funding increased

(February 1, 2012)  Education Minister Nancy Allan has announced an increase of 2.2 percent in funding for public schools for the 2012-13 school year.  Flin Flon School Superintendent Blaine Veitch says the Division was fortunate in receiving above the provincial average with an increase of 4.9 percent.  Veitch said the removal of the Tax Incentive Grant in place for the past four years to encourage school boards to freeze taxes should not affect them this year.  He says that’s going to be an issue in the future but his understanding is that this year Divisions that received funds through TIG will continue to do so and so they will receive the same amount from the province as long as there is no increases in taxes, so it will be a much easier position for the board to look at holding the line on taxes again this year.

Veitch says finance meetings will be held with the board and school administrators to review drafts of their budget to be followed by a public budget meeting before final approval.
